It would be useful to know more about the possibility (stated in the article, that is) that Singi may have meant "round" or "circular". Anybody? This information was added by an anonymous IP. Alexander 007 01:38, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Meaning of a name "Beograd"

"The city would re-emerge later, mentioned as Beograd, a Slavic word meaning "white fortress" (due to the color of the stone it was built from)"

I changed the translation from "white city" to "white fortress". Today serbian word "grad" indeed means "city" but it was not always the case. In that time it ment only a fortress (as even today in other slavic languages e.g. Polish "grĂ³d"). Thus, for slavs, Singidunum was a "white fortress" and not a "white city" as it is being translated today... Not to mention that, after all, in VIIth century it was only a fortress not a city!:)
