Single-stroke roll
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The single-stroke roll is a rudiment used by drummers and percussionists in a variety of music styles. This roll is the most basic of the drum rudiments, and it is often the first rudiment that drummers learn.
The Single stroke isvery easy to learn. You simply alternate your sticking: Right, Left, Right, Left. The key to perfecting this rudiment is to make sure it is in time, and that each stroke sounds the same. If you wish to add accents it can add to the rudiment, but when you are first learning the single-stroke roll it is important to keep each stroke uniform.
This rudiment works equally with both matched grip and traditional grip. If you are mixing the techniques (one hand doing matched grip, and one hand doing traditional grip) make sure that you are getting an equal amount of volume from each stroke.
