[edit] Terminated destinations
The following destinations were served by scheduled SIA flights but are currently suspended or terminated. Several destinations were transferred to its regional wing, SilkAir, while others were taken up by low-cost affiliate Tiger Airways.
The Asian financial crisis resulted in a network-wide review of its routes, and the termination of several, including Cairns, Darwin, Sendai, Hangzhou and Berlin. The effects of the September 11 attacks on New York City also caused a spate of service adjustments and reductions to the network for the next few years, including services to Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Macau, Kathmandu and Durban. Services to the two Pakistani cities of Karachi, Lahore (SQ418) were suspended due to war in the region in 10 May 2002, but were resumed on 1 February 2006.
The year 2003 saw several more rounds of severe service cut-backs due to the effects from the SARS Crisis, as well as the war situation in Iraq. Services to Brussels, Chicago, Las Vegas, Hiroshima, Kaohsiung and Mauritius were suspended in 2003. In 2004, Vienna and Madrid were also dropped.
