Hi Simon123, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thanks for joining the coolest online encyclopedia I know of. I hope you stick around. You'll probably find it easiest to start with a tutorial of how the wikipedia works, and you can test stuff for yourself in the sandbox. Check out the simplified ruleset. When you're contributing, you'll probably find the manual of style to be helpful, and you'll also want to remember a couple important guidelines.
- Write from a neutral point of view
- Be bold in editing pages
- Use wikiquette.
Those are probably the most important ones, and you can take a look at some others at the policies and guidelines page. You might also be interested in how to write a great article and possibly adding some images to your articles.
Be sure to get involved in the community – you can contact me on my talk page if you have any questions, and you can check out the village pump, where lots of wikipedians hang out and discuss things. If you're looking for something to do, check out the community portal. And whenever you ask a question or post something on a talk page, be sure to sign your name by typing 4 tildes like ~~~~. You recently cut-and-pasted the contents of the article With-profit fund to With-profits policy, citing a discussion that I have been unable to locate. If you were trying to perform a page move, please be aware that this is not the proper way to do it. If this is not what you intended, could you please explain your intentions below, or at least provide a link to the discussion you referred to in your edit summary. I tried to add the article last night but the servers froze and I was unaware until this morning it has been submitted. I have now added the explaination in the new articles discussion page. I am unaware of how to perform a page move, maybe this would have been better. If you think it would be advantageous then please go ahead.

Okay, if you're going to rewrite With-profits policy and leave With-profit fund as it is, then I suppose cutting and pasting it was probably fine. You might want to add an {{underconstruction}} template to With-profits policy until you get the rewrite at least mostly done.
The proper way to move a page is with the "move" button at the top of the page. If you don't see one, wait — to make page move vandalism harder, the "move" button is not immediately available to new users. It will appear once you've been around long enough and made enough edits.
Unfortunately only administrators can turn a "cut-and-paste move" into a real one, and it's a nontrivial process even for them. For details, see fixing cut and paste moves. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 15:06, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mutual funds as trusts
In point of fact, all the Fidelity funds are organized as Massachusetts business trusts. Furthermore, you might want to reconsider your notion of "common misconception". If most English-speaking people think pecans are nuts, then all the botanists in the world insisting that they are not nuts but in fact drupe seeds does not change the English-language meaning of the word. The fact that a U.S. regulatory agency has a definition of "mutual fund" does not privilege their definition over the English-language definition thereof, particularly in an international project like Wikipedia. I checked the two dictionaries most easily available to me; the American Heritage hews closer to your practice, but does seem to include ETFs in its definition. The OED, on the other hand, says "A form of collective investment in a managed fund; spec. = unit trust". So if you insist on hewing to the SEC's definition, you might want to consider renaming the article so that someone else can write the article about the more general (and global) meaning. 121a0012 15:19, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
I stand corrected. US Mutual Funds may be structured as trusts.
However you have misread my intentions in the edit I made. I have spent a long time trying to remove the heavy US bias in many investment articles and especially in the article 'mutual funds'. If you look back through the history you will see the article assumed all collective investments were sub-types of mutual funds whereas the SEC makes clear distinctions for the US and this is definitely not the case elsewhere in the world. To try and counter the bias I started the article collective investment scheme to give a world view. Furthermore I added the two descriptions in the lead paragraphs of the mutual fund article to spell out the US and non-US usage and added a statement to make it clear the remainder of the article follows the US meaning and added link to the collective investment article for all others.
I assumed the US regulator in stating 'MF = open-end companies', meant that they were all companies now I have followed the link to the legislation it is apparent that the 'management company' is what's being referred to and that "any redeemable security of which it is the issuer" may well refer to a trust. I will re-instate your edits and expand the point in the article. Simon West 16:29, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. I had been thinking for a while that we didnt really have suitable coverage of current accounts, in many cases wiki ends up putting these type of things together eg have a UK section on the Checkable deposits page. I think there is an extremely strong argument for keeping this one separate, although I have a feeling that we might have to defend it from merger at some stage.
In terms of content its in my ponderances at the moment, however I'm begining to think it has the foundations of a featured article eventually, there is also plenty of opportunity for pictures and summary sections. Probably have an attempt at sketching out a structure soon; debit cards, BACS/CHAPS, overdrafts (inc fees?/oft investigation), credit interest, internet/telephone/branch, cheques, SO/DD and offseting would seem to be the key sections to include, let me know/add any others that you think should be in. [edit] Mortgage article and predatory mortgage lending
Simon, I would welcome a global perspective on the subject of predatory mortgage lending. But I fail how it can be described as a "personal crusade". On the contrary, its a valid subject which should be addressed in any article on mortgage. At the very least there should be some mention of this within the body of the article.
Please allow me to add that I believe its important to address the risks involved in obtaining a mortgage. In any consumer's guide to any mortgage which a person could buy off the shelf of any bookstore, you will find caveats regarding the mortgage industry. I also think its good counter-ballance to an article which basically praises mortgage lenders without stating how a few wrongful doers are taking advantage of consumers.
If you do not like the paragraphs that I had written then feel free to rewrite it. In the meantime, I hope you do not mind but I inserted one single sentence at the end of "legal aspects" regarding predatory practices.
One final word, if I may. I am a completely neutral party to this topic. I am not employed in the mortgage industry or in financial professions of any kind. Furthermore this is the first topic on financial matters that I had edited. I posted this statement because I believe it is important. I tried to be fair and even handed.

I note from articles that you are trying to remove US-english bias, but there are a few items where this is not necessary. "Adviser" and "Advisor" are acceptable variant spellings on both sides of the pond (I have checked both my Websters and Chambers dictionaries on this matter) However, to your facour, you were reverting something that another pedant had changed in the first place and most professional IFA bodies in the UK seem to prefer the "er" ending. Beware also of changing "izes" to "ises". the use of z is not American and in fact still the prefered choice of the OED. Look at any pre second world war publications and you will struggle to find an "ise" as it is a recent twist in British English. Good articles from you by the way! Dainamo 23:52, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

I know you are still keen on merging these two articles, and I think I am too, but given the only other comment has been a dissent, it is probably not something to rush into lest we get someone's back up. What I think I'll do is start working on a merged article in my sandbox (User:Legis/sandbox), and wait a little bit longer for any other views. If no other views are raised I suggest we go ahead with the merge on a 2:1 basis. I probably won't start work on it until the weekend; bit busy at work at the moment. Hi Simon
You asked the source of the information I provided on Girobank.
I was employed by the organisation from 1977 until 1995 in the small HQ in London.
The information prior to 1977 comes from my discussions with numerous managers. There was also a book written about the history of the National Giro and I would recommend that you try and get hold of it if you are interested. I obtained it from my local library and read it many years ago, so unfortunately I cannot remember the name of the author.
I also had access to the numerous archives stored in the office, including access to planning papers for the organisation dating from (if I recall correctly) from about 1966. I used to travel frequently to the Operations Centre in Bootle and knew quite many managers and employers working there.
If you have any questions just ask ... I'll do my best to answer them if I can.

The lead article of the Project recently lost its FA status, and now some of the other articles are being reviewed. Citations and references within articles are again the major concern. Contributors who have literature (books, magazines, links, etc.) are especially needed to provide the necessary citations. It is not enough for editors to know the facts; they need to be backed up by other sources. All help, both within the articles and the discussion, would be appreciated.

Again, the issue of the month is inline citations. A Day in the Life, A Hard Day's Night (song), and Get Back have all been defeatured, as they failed to satisfy criterion 1(c) of What is a featured article?, and other song FAs are due for the chopping block. Inline citations are an important aspect of articles—they ensure verifiability and reliability, and they remove original research. Additionally, they give readers the option to read the original source material and view it within context. Basically:

Wherever possible, editors should help to trim down on list-like prose within Beatles articles. They should convert list-like sections into fluent, cohesive prose which ties an article's sections together. Lists make articles disjointed, awkward, and difficult to read. Wikipedia's standards are improving all the time, with the result that many articles in The Beatles Wikiproject are being nominated for review of their FA and GA status - and many are losing that accolade. It is difficult, with such a large number of articles and the ease with which editors may make changes which are detrimental, to maintain the standard of articles, let alone improve them. As ever, members efforts are both appreciated and needed to keep the Project on course.

If one is to be mercenary about the subject, it should be noted that Paul McCartney is going to be more noteworthy than usual in the near future as his divorce case comes to court. In that case it is great to note that a small group of Project Members (plus another individual who does not feel compelled to register himself despite important contributions) have worked very hard, and in an atmosphere of good humour, to take the McCartney piece to a succesful Good Article nomination. Perhaps this is the method to use for future articles, a small dedicated team concentrating on one subject at a time. Of course, all members are invited to join any existing group or even go about forming their own. Please note any such action in the Project Log.
