- On 21 February 1989, Tradewinds the Airline was born. When the airline first took to the skies, its focus was on serving an exotic array of holiday destinations around the region such as Pattaya, Phuket, Hatyai, Kuantan and Tioman. As the carrier matured, regional business destinations such as Jakarta, Phnom Penh and Yangon were added to its network, thereby broadening the airline's appeal beyond the holiday maker to include the business traveller.
- On 01 April 1992, the carrier was re-named SILKAIR, representing its evolution from a holiday resort airline to one which caters to both business and leisure passengers. The company's Tours & Travel Division was restructured into a wholly-owned subsidiary of SILKAIR, and retained the name Tradewinds Tours & Travel Pte. Ltd.
The first 6 destinations at the launch of the airlines were the 5 listed above and Bandar Seri Begawan. The latter was an afternoon flight (and not the SQ182/181 morning flight/ returning noon) which was dropped after about a year in operation.
