Silverstein is a post-hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario, of debatable sub-genre. Their name is taken from from Shel Silverstein; one of their favorite authors of popular children's books. The band was formed in 2000 in what they facetiously called in a press bio "an attempt to exploit the marketability of hardcore and emo". While they do ape many elements of these genres, some street team promoters place them in the "emocore" genre.
The band formed in June of 2000 as a side-project for most of the original members, who were all in other local bands at the time. They recorded their first demo two months later, with various players, including lead vocalist Shane Told, filling in bass parts, as they did not have a regular bassist at the time. The demo would be pressed and released locally in August of that year as the EP Summer's Stellar Gaze.
After a couple of personnel changes, the band acquired a permanent bassist in Billy Hamilton, a local fan who learned of the band's need for a permanent bassist on 'The 905 Board' an internet message board centred around the music of the Southern Ontario, 905 area code. He joined the band after being taught some of the songs by Told two days before Christmas 2001, followed by one day of rehearsal on Boxing Day 2001, before making his debut with the band the next evening. The following spring, original guitarist Richard McWalter left the band to move to Victoria, British Columbia and study engineering; he would be replaced by Neil Boshart. The new lineup recorded a second EP, When the Shadows Beam, in preparation for their first, self-booked tour of Eastern Canada.
The band signed to Victory Records in October of 2002. (At the time, Hamilton was trying to finish high school, which he did successfully one semester early.) The following January, the band recorded their full-length Victory debut CD When Broken Is Easily Fixed.
In 2005 the band performed on the Never Sleep Again tour with bands such as Aiden, Hawthorne Heights and Bayside.--on which Bayside's drummer John "Beatz" Holohan would be killed. In January-February 2006, they toured with the band Simple Plan in Europe. They then toured Canada with the Taste of Chaos Tour, and also toured Europe, Japan, and Australia.
They recently toured on the 2006 Vans Warped Tour, in support of both their current studio album Discovering the Waterfront, and the compilation 18 Candles: The Early Years, which compiles the band's first two self-financed EPs with some acoustic and live material and "a crude mechanical remix" of the Discovering The Waterfront single "Smile In Your Sleep".
The band is now on a major North American headlining tour, with the band Aiden playing the U.S. dates.
In a recent AP preview of their next CD. Vocalist Shane Told said it was going to be notably more metal than their previous albums.
