[edit] History
Silver Lake Regional High School was founded in 1955 and comprised of the towns of Pembroke, Kingston, Plympton and Halifax in Southeastern Massachusetts. The original building of the school stood until 2005 when it was torn down, however the original football field, Ciraco Field, remains. The Silver Lake campus eventually grew too small for the growing populations of the towns. Over-crowding in the school led the town of Pembroke to withdraw from the district and form its own independent school district.
Because of overcrowding and an outdated school a new high school was constructed on the site of the original building. The school is one of the most expensive standing in Massachusetts and is right next to the new Silver Lake Middle School.
[edit] Athletics
The name for the Silver Lake teams is the Lakers.
For 49 years Silver Lake competed in Division I athletics in the Old Colony League in the MIAA. The school boasted a largly sucessful football program but was regionally known for excelling in basketball and hockey. In the late 1990's and early 2000's Silver Lake became a consistant post-season force.
In 2005, after the withdrawal of the town of Pembroke, Silver Lake began competing in Division II. The Lakers now compete in the Patriot League of Southeastern Massachusetts. The most recent success of a Silver Lake team was the men's soccer team advancing to the regional quarterfinals but losing to Hingham. The most notable school rivalries would be Duxbury High School and Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.
[edit] Silver Lake in the News
Silver Lake has been a constant in the Boston news media and occasionally the national media. In 2002 Silver Lake grabbed headlines after a student engaged in sexual acts on a school bus. It was covered on the O'Reilly Factor when Bill O'Reilly called for the principal to be fired. Most recently it made news when a distraught mother made threats against the Freshman football team.[1]
The Rachel Souza Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established for students in memory of 1997 graduate Rachel Entwistle (née Souza).
