Sils im Engadin/Segl

Sils im Engadin/Segl is a municipality in the Engadin valley of the Grisons in Switzerland. It is nested between two lakes at the foot of Piz Corvatsch and Piz la Margna and below the Fex valley, in some of the most beautiful alpine sceneries. Sils/Segl was originally divided into the two hamlets of Baselgia and Maria, but the two now form a continuum. The town is in a flat plain between the two lakes, with steep slopes on either side. The plain is cultivated in grass, the steep slopes are heavily forested.

Sils hosted Friedrich Nietzsche in the summers between 1881 and 1888, and the house he vacationed in is now a small museum. Hermann Hesse also visited Sils.

The official languages are German and Romansh, reflected in the double name. The Fex valley is officially car-free except for residents of the valley. The Furtschellas cable car begins near the village and leads to many ski runs and, in summer, to trails above the tree line.
