On POSIX-compliant platforms, SIGRTMAX is the last user-defined real-time signal that can be sent to computer programs. The symbolic constant for SIGRTMAX is defined in the header file signal.h. Symbolic signal names are used because signal numbers can vary across platforms.

SIG is a common prefix for signal names. RTMAX is an abbreviation for real-time maximum.
