Talk:Siena
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm concerned about the "Getting There" - this does not strike me as something that should be in an encyclopedia - surely this should be in WikiTravel? --PatrickJCollins 16:02, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
The "Palio di Siena" is potentially a huge matter. Maybe it should have a page by itself.. What do you think?
- If we can have a non-stub article on it, I'd say go for it. -- Infrogmation 03:46, 25 Jun 2004 (UTC)

- Yes, I was thinking about writing an article, not a stub. I'm not from Siena, but I love the Palio and I belong to the "Contrada della Torre" (Tower). So, I'll be happyto write an article about that FedericoCaboni

- I've added a couple of lines reporting the animalists' complaints, really actual after today's mortal incident to the horse of the Bruco, a 8yo gelding, named Amoroso. --213.255.107.33 20:22, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] University of Siena - 1204 ?
Don't know about the date of foundation. It seems it was 1240. Don't know Italian but it is worth consulting the official website of the university.

[edit] Conflict in dates listed for the Palio di Siena
The date of the "Palio di Siena" is listed here as the second of June. However, if you follow the link to the "Palio di Siena", it says that the date for the race is July 2. I think that the correct date is July 2. This needs to be changed.

[edit] Major Edit
Expanded the history of Siena, made a seperate Art and Architecture section containing a lot of the existing material, added some info for travellers.
Left the palio section as it is - it's right to have a seperate page.
Most of the info comes from Siena (J Hook), La Terra in Piazza: Interpretation of the Palio of Siena (A Dundes, A Falassi), and various tourist publications. Corrections very welcome! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stuart Hardie (talk • contribs) 02:34, 21 June 2005 UTC.
[edit] Sienna vs. Siena
Can we unify which spelling is used in the article? --NEMT 00:22, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
I started to "correct" the spelling to the Italian "Siena". I had no idea that English speakers spelled it differently. Is this variant spelling still common? I'd prefer to use the Italian version. --Matthew Simoneau 21:02, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
- I have never seen the city referred to as Sienna in any english language textbook, in italy or the us. Also, even if Sienna is the correct english spelling (which I doubt) it is more common on wiki for local city names to be used (eg: Mumbai vs. Bombay). --NEMT 15:09, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
You know, case closed, we have consensus. This article is called "Siena," thus, that is the appropriate spelling in all instances. If a proponent of Sienna would like to add a section on alternate spelling/s that's fine. --NEMT 16:10, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
