Sierra Leone Liberated Africans

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sierra Leone Liberated Africans were freed by the Royal Navy from slave ships rescued on the high seas and brought to Freetown, now Sierra Leone's capital city. The Liberated Africans came from as far north as Senegal and as far south as Angola; about 75% were from what is now Nigeria. Their diverse African languages and cultures blended with the influences already brought by the freed slaves from North America and the West Indies. The result was the distinctive language and culture of the Krio people.
