Sidcup Art College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sidcup Art College was an art college in Sidcup, London Borough of Bexley (an outer suburb of Greater London near Kent), England.
One of the college's most famous students was Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Richards became friends with Mick Jagger at the time, sharing a mutual interest in American blues music. They met on a train in 1961 when Richards was in his third and final year at Sidcup, while Jagger was in his first year at the London School of Economics. Richards was expelled from the College but an early version of The Rolling Stones played there on 12 December 1962. The line-up was Jagger, Richards, Brian Jones, Ian Stewart ("Stu"), Ricky Fenson and Tony Chapman.
The Pretty Things, one of Britain's early R&B bands, was formed at the College in September 1963, including Dick Taylor, a former bassist with the Stones who became an art student at Sidcup.
The College has recently been demolished to make way for a large modern supermarket.
