[edit] CSD Exersise

Ok then, here are some articles that were really up for deletion. Take a look at them and say if you would have deleted them and why. Exercise created by EWS23 for admin coaching purposes. NCurse work 16:42, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay, this is a test to make sure you understand the policies of speedy deletion. The following are actual cases that I have come across while clearing out CAT:CSD. Assume that the title of the page is everything following User:EWS23/CSD/. You are allowed to use any technique that you might usually use to assert notability (e.g.- Google), but you are not allowed to use Wikipedia in any way (you cannot see if the page still exists on Wikipedia, go through my deletion log to see if I deleted it, and any Google searches you do should use "Subject -Wikipedia" which is a good tool anyway to help eliminate Wikipedia mirrors).

Assume for this exercise that you are an administrator. View the page, but do not edit it (I plan on using these for multiple coachees). Then, return here and comment below the entry in question. Write whether you would delete the page or not. If you would, cite the specific criteria at WP:CSD that you would use to delete it. If you would not delete it, state why, and state what you would do to the page (simply remove the tag, redirect it somewhere else, keep it but remove certain information from it, etc.). Good luck! EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 20:59, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

P.S.- In real cases, you should ALWAYS check the page history before making a decision. Sometimes the page is a legitimate article that got vandalized, or page moved, etc. In this case, the page history won't tell you anything (I'm the only contributor), but remember that in real cases the page history is important. EWS23 (Leave me a message!) 21:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Good to see very nice examples for CAT:CSD. Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Halo 3 trailier

  • Delete
    • Reason: Very little information has been provided on the article which is an uncyclopediac because of very few contexts. (A1) Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Union Millwright

  • Delete
    • Reason: There is no contexts on the page. Citing the sources is not sufficient to sustain the article. (A3) Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Webs

  • Delete
    • Reason: Article talk about a particluar person or group's signature which is a kind of copyright and patent thing. (G1) Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Neil Haverton Smith

[edit] Fall Out Boy

  • Keep
    • Authors have to agree to license their contributions under GFDL. If (s)he creates an article which was not created mistakenly and has useful information, then it should not delete. Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nathaniel Bar-Jonah

  • Keep
    • It does not seem to be patent non sense. Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree with all of your answers. If you have time, please have a look at my admin coaching answers for the same deletion tasks. NCurse work 20:27, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Questions

  1. Have you ever participated in any kind of admin-related processes? (deletions, recent changes patrol, new page patrol, killing spams, warning vandals, etc.) NCurse work 16:36, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I was associated in cleaning up backlog on untagged images. Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
  2. Why do you want to become an admin? NCurse work 16:36, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Very tough and good question:) Wikipedia is the free encyclopedia. Anybody could use the information and contribute to make the world of free knowledge. To make the world of free knowledge there needs to make positive contributions and remove negative and harmfull contribution. Any user could make positive contributions on Wikipedia, but removing negative contribution from other users I want to handle administrative tools. Shyam (T/C) 19:44, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
If we talk about admin power, what do you think of that essay? NCurse work 20:23, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
The essay is well written and explains the some good points. But it looks like that author wants to criticise Wikipedia. It does not cover many points, like WP:3RR. It is quite true that after getting admin powers some users do not contribute more. They just use admin tools sometimes. It is the bad thing to wikipedia. But I try to be here forever. Shyam (T/C) 11:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
So you think that an admin must be a good editor too. Then what do you think of WP:1FA? NCurse work 14:49, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, an admin must be a good editor. If someone has contributed for one featured article, it is good. But I do not think that it is necessary and sufficient to be an admin. Wikipedia is a worldwide website, we could not restrict to few articles. If an editor only contributes to make an article featured, it is not the mandatory case that he has understood wikipedia very well. Yes, Wikipedia is absolutely an encyclopedia, but it is worldwide. If all the editors would be restricted to few articles to make them featured, it would not be able to cover many topics which should existing here in good form. Shyam (T/C) 15:09, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
  3. Do you use any anti-vandal tool? NCurse work
I use Navigation popups to deal with vandals. Other than popup tool I do not have any specific tool:( Shyam (T/C) 20:59, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
Don't you want to use VandalProof 2? NCurse work 21:04, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
I wish I could use this tool. I am behind a firewall which does not allow to open IRC channels. I tried sometimes to open IRC channels but could not get succeeded. Any help would be appericiated for it. Shyam (T/C) 11:44, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
What do you use? Xp? Firefox? (Anyway don't you want to get this help by skype or msn? It'd be easier :)) NCurse work 14:49, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I do use Windows XP, Mozilla firefox. Is it possible to get in touch with IRC channel using skype or msn? I could use any one of them. Please tell me the procedure, Shyam (T/C) 15:09, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
You could use Chatzilla which is a Firefox addon. You can't use msn or skype for IRC, I meant that I could help more efficiently by skype or msn. NCurse work 15:14, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. I have installed it but still facing problem to connect. Probably it would be getting connected. Shyam (T/C) 17:52, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
The problem could be your Firefox version. Which one do you use? Or you can remove Mirc from your firewall list like that: Control Panel - Windows Firewall - Exceptions and there unmark Mirc. I hope it helps. NCurse work 20:39, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
I contribute to the wikipedia using Mozilla Firefox (1.5.0.7). I do not use Windows Firewall. Currently I am using Sygate Personal Firewall. Do not be bothered, I will try to manage a substitute for it. But I want to ask is it necessary to use IRC channels for an RfA? Shyam (T/C) 06:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
No, it's not so necessary. Just a good way to communicate with other admins, editors. But if you want to use VandalProof 2, then you have to solve it somehow. :) NCurse work 06:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
  4. What are your favourite contributions? NCurse work 20:23, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
My favourite contributions are Indian politics Project, maintaining Government of India Portal. My previuos work on untagged images project also sounds good to me. The contributions to Portal:India to make it featured portal is also one of the featured contributions from my side. Shyam (T/C) 20:59, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
  5. Are you a regular contributor? I mean you had a big break (2006/5 - 2006/8). Why? You made 8536 edits in one month?? :) NCurse work 14:54, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I am a regular contributor. I was away from wikipedia because of un availability of internet at the time. After that I am contributing regularly to Wikipedia. Those big contributions were to clean up the images fron untagged images project. The actual edits were about 11,000 but many of the images were being deleted. Shyam (T/C) 17:52, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
  6. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future? (regular RfA question) NCurse work 20:39, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
Yes. When I was working on the Untagged images project, I had to face many conflicts. One of the major conflicts was with PM Poon. It was resolved in a polite response from my side. His conservations on my talk page could be seen here and here also. Another major conflict was with Chrisobyrne. Discussions are available here and here also. But I was unable to convince him and he got satisfactory answers by filing a mediation case. In future I will try to deal with in similar manner which had no no personal attacks. I always try to remain civil, stay cool and try to resolve any conflicts by polite response. I assume good faith in Wikipedia's policy. Shyam (T/C) 06:40, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

Look Shyam, you have everything you need to become an admin. You know the tools, because of your works on portals, projects, you need those. You are ready to remove backlog, have great contributions, civil...etc. If you don't mind, I'd like to write your nomination. If you agree, please give me a lot of diffs (by e-mail) that show some of your best contributions, vandal warnings, reverting vandalisms, being civil in a dispute, helping out newcomers, removing backlogs. I see no reason why you would fail, but diffs are always welcome. :) NCurse work 15:52, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
