This is the first AFI release with Hunter Burgan playing bass guitar.

The introduction song's lyrics contain the words A Fire Inside, a common expansion of the band's acronym-name.
The album's track layout is unique in that it contains repeated references to the number 3. Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes is AFI's third album, and the songs containing variations of the number 3 in their titles are three tracks apart. The use of the number 3 would go on to be a recurring theme in subsequent albums.
