Shuishu
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Shūishū ("Collection of Gleanings") was an imperial anthology of Japanese waka, compiled at the behest of Emperor Kazan, by Fujiwara no Kintō (966-1041) (son of Fujiwara no Yoritada). Its twenty volumes contained 1,351 poems. The details of its publication and compilation is unclear. Miner and Brower write: "Present official collection [is] believed to be a revision and enlargement by Kazan of Kintō's manuscript." (His manuscript was the "Draft of the Shūishū" (Shūishō)). They further describe it as conservative and "dominated by Kintō's preference for smooth, inoffensive style, by attenuation".
