Shuffle Along

Shuffle Along, written and composed by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake, premiered in 1921, and was the first major African American hit musical of the 1920s. The production starred Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall, and Paul Robeson.
Shuffle Along opened at Daly's 63rd Street Theatre and ran for several years with such success that the street had to be made one-way to cope with the traffic. Road versions toured successfully throughout the country up to 1924. It was a major showcase for black talent.
In 1932, the show was revived at the Mansfield Theatre but closed after seventeen performances.
Today, the musical would be considered offensively stereotypical.
