Shrewsbury Township is a Township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 1,098.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²), all land.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,098 people, 521 households, and 254 families residing in the township. The population density was 4,710.4/km² (11,624.7/mi²). There were 546 housing units at an average density of 2,342.4/km² (5,780.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 66.76% White, 16.67% African American, 10.02% Asian, 2.82% from other races, and 3.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.65% of the population.

There were 521 households out of which 24.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 28.6% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 51.1% were non-families. 39.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.10 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the township the population was spread out with 20.6% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 37.8% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $36,875, and the median income for a family was $42,500. Males had a median income of $32,813 versus $30,598 for females. The per capita income for the township was $23,574. About 6.9% of families and 8.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.7% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

Shrewsbury Township is in the Twelfth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 12th Legislative District.[1]

New Jersey's Twelfth Congressional District, covering all of Hunterdon County and portions of Middlesex County, Monmouth County, Morris County, and Somerset County, is represented by Rush D. Holt Jr. (D). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Robert Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 12th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Ellen Karcher (D, Marlboro) and in the Assembly by Jennifer Beck (R, Red Bank) and Michael J. Panter (D, Red Bank). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Monmouth County is governed by a five-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Monmouth County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director William C. Barham, Freeholder Deputy Director Robert D. Clifton, Lillian G. Burry, Anna C. Little and Theodore J. Narozanick.

Students in grades K through 8 attend the three schools in the Tinton Falls School District. The district is a regional district that also serves students from the neighboring community of Tinton Falls. All three of the district's schools are located in Tinton Falls.

Students in grades 9 to 12 attend Monmouth Regional High School, located in Tinton Falls. The high school is part of the Monmouth Regional High School District, which serves students from Shrewsbury Township and Tinton Falls, along with students from Eatontown, Fort Monmouth and Naval Weapons Station Earle.
