Shrek is a New Zealand merino sheep that gained international fame after he avoided being caught and sheared for six years. Merinos are normally sheared annually, but Shrek apparently hid in caves. He was named after the movie character. [1]

After being caught, he was shaved on national broadcast[2]. His fleece, weighing 27 kg (60 lb) contained enough wool to make vests for 20 men[3].

Shrek became a national mascot. He was taken to Parliament to meet the Prime Minister, Helen Clark in May, 2004. [4]

To celebrate his 10th birthday, Shrek was shorn on an iceberg floating off the coast of Dunedin. [5]
