Because the PNG format supports lossless compression, edits made to PNG files do not reduce their quality. If possible, please upload a PNG version of this image. If a source URL for the image is listed and functional, please convert the image found at that location in the chance that the creator of this image made edits to the original which consequently reduced its quality. Conversion can be done with free image-editing software such as GIMP. After doing so, please replace all instances of the previous version throughout Wikipedia (noted under the "File links" header), tag the old version with {{PNG version available|NewImage.png}}, and remove this tag. - This template automatically adds images to Category:Images which should be in PNG format.
- This template should not be used for
- high-resolution images. JPEG is preferable for large image files.
- images for which only a JPEG source is available; recompressing with PNG will not remove artifacts and will produce larger files
- animated images. PNG does not support animation so GIF should be used instead
- images which contain strictly vector (non-raster) data. SVG should be used in this case.
