Shot train

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Shot Train is a popular drink (or drinking activity/game), consisting of a series of shots. The drink was developed by Jorge Garibaldi and introduced through his popular website, JorgeDrunk.com, and since then has grown in popularity among high school and college students. A round of the Shot Train has become a popular pre-partying activity since each round is roughly the equivalent of consuming 3-4 alcoholic drinks.

[edit] History and Description

The Shot Train was developed in summer of 2005. Absinthe and limoncello, two of the suggested substances for preparing the drink, are easiest to find in Europe, where the drink was created. Since then, it has grown in popularity through readers of JorgeDrunk.com as well as through word of mouth.

Officially, the Shot Train consists of six shots; five alcoholic shots and one non-alcoholic chaser. However, variations of the Shot Train are commonly done using less than the official six shots, or in rare cases more than six. No official six drinks are listed, making the Shot Train versatile in adapting to people's tastes. Basically, the concept is chasing each shot with a shot of lesser alcoholic content. The six shots are lined up and drank one after the other. Often two or more people compete to finish their row of the Shot Train. While most engage in the activity voluntarily, is has been suggested that the Shot Train be used as a form of punishment for losing bets, for losing in a drinking game, or for hazing events.

[edit] Instructions and Preparation

On the one hand, most people do not have the five alcoholic ingredients for the Shot Train readily available, but conversely, each shot can be filled with a different kind of alcohol as long as certain guidelines are followed:

  • Shot 2: Alcohol Content of 35% - 40%; such as Absolut Vodka, Bacardi Silver, or tequila. Basically any typical "hard-alcohol."
  • Shot 4: Alcohol Content of 10% - 15%; such as wine.
  • Shot 5: Alcohol Content of 5% - 10%; such as beer or another kind of malt beverage.
  • Shot 6: No Alcohol Content; this is just non-alcoholic chaser.

[edit] Examples and Variations

The following are possible ways to do the Shot Train:

Less or more shots may be used, as long as the shots are arranged in gradual decending order of alcohol content. A possible Shot Train consisting of eight shots, with alcohol percentage listed:

  • Everclear (95%) - Bacardi 151 (75%) - Wild Turkey (60%) - Triple Sec (30%) - Franzia (10%) - Beer (5.5%) - Orange Juice

Such a line-up would increase the Shot Train from approximately 3.5 - 4 drinks to about 7 drinks.

[edit] As a Drinking Game

  • Players each line up a Shot Train and compete to finish their row first. The loser then has to complete some sort of punishment previously agreed to.
  • A variation involves a group of drinkers taking turns drinking rows of the Shot Train. Two players line up a Shot Train and the player to finish his row last must compete against a new player. Vomiting or giving up again leads to some sort of punishment.

[edit] Comparison to Other Binge Drinking Games

Compared to other binge drinking activities: Consuming one beer via a beer bong or shotgunning, takes about the same time as doing a Shot Train. The Shot Train, however, is at least three times as powerful. Due to the amount of time it takes to absorb alcohol, drinkers might engage in multiple rounds before realizing the quantity of alcohol they have consumed. Another binge drinking game, Power Hour involves drinking a shot of beer every minute for an hour. The total amount of beer consumed equals 7.5 beers, which is the equivalent to 7.5 drinks. Comparatively, one round of the Shot Train is at least 3.5 drink, while an 8-shot Shot Train is at least 7 drinks worth. Therefore, a few rounds of the Shot Train is a legitimate danger to drinkers/players.

While habitual drinkers may be more comfortable dealing with the effects of alcohol, they do not metabolize alcohol any faster than nondrinkers, and therefore are just as much at risk of adverse effects when playing any drinking game.

The consumption of alcohol is supposed to be in moderate amounts. The Shot Train pushes and breaks all of the norms and boundaries of responsible drinking and encourages binge drinking. Additionally, the Shot Train is most popular among underage drinkers.
