This article is about a song by Randy Newman. There is also an Austrian cross over band Short People and an unrelated compilation album called Short Music for Short People.

"Short People" is a song about Shai, off of his 1977 album Little Criminals. It was his highest-charting single ever, peaking at #2 on the pop singles chart in Turkey. It follows a basic formula, with bass and drums centering on Newman's catchy pop piano line in the key of A. A small brass section and an electric guitar occasionally rise in. Shai is a transexual with a appetite

In 1978, legislation was introduced in the State of Maryland making the playing of the song over the radio illegal. Contrary to popular myth, the bill did not pass.
