Short Heath, Birmingham
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Short Heath is an area of Erdington, Birmingham, England.
Looking at Short Heath on an Ordnance Survey Landranger map it appears no less smaller or unimportant than neighbouring areas such as Boldmere, Stockland Green or Oscott.
Compared to these areas, though, Short Heath suffers from a lack of identity. Boldmere, in Boldmere Road, has a high street in all but name, but Short Heath does not have a centre of activity.
The name lives on in four places:
- Short Heath Primary School
- Short Heath Post Office
- Short Heath Park
- Short Heath Road
But the park, the school & the post office are not close to each other, so there is not an obvious place to call the centre.
The area that comes closest to a centre is from the junction of Short Heath Road & Station Road, where the Red Lion Pub stands on the corner, to Erdington Station, including the shops surrounding the junction of Gravelly Lane & Station Road. The latter group of shops includes the post office.
Again, the identity problem is clear, as most of these shops are along the road from Erdington Station.
