Shoe Bowl
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Shoe Bowl is a preseason, round-robin football scrimmage that was rejuvenated in 2006 at the University of Toledo's Glass Bowl. It features football teams of local Toledo area high schools playing in one or two 12-15 minute quarters against one or more opponents.
The Shoe Bowl was originally started in the 1930s under this format by the Old Newsboys as a way to raise money for needy children. In 1966, the Toledo City League expanded to include 12 teams (and later on, two 6-team divisions), and the Shoe Bowl became the championship game for the league's two divisional winners. This continued until the end of the 1990-91 school year when DeVilbiss and Macomber high schools were closed and the divisions ceased to exist. The current City League championship game is the "Hall of Fame Game".
On September 18, 2006, the Shoe Bowl tradition returned to Toledo when Bedford (MI), Cardinal Stritch, Evergreen, St. John's, Scott, Start, and Woodward high schools met at the Glass Bowl to scrimmage each other. The formats were different for each scrimmage, as can be seen below:
Game | Matchup | Format | Score |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Woodward vs. Start | Two 15 minute quarters | 36-0, Start |
2 | Scott vs. Cardinal Stritch | One 12 minute quarter | 6-6 Tie |
3 | Evergreen vs. Scott | One 12 minute quarter | 14-0, Evergreen |
4 | Cardinal Stritch vs. Evergreen | One 12 minute quarter | 13-6, Evergreen |
5 | Bedford vs. St. John's | Two 15 minute quarters | 27-0, St. John's |
