Shlomtzion Party
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shlomtzion (Hebrew: שלומציון) was an Israeli political party, founded by Ariel Sharon in 1977, prior to the general elections for the 9th Knesset in which the party gained 2 seats (Sharon and Yitzhak Yitzhaky). [1].
Prior to the elections, Sharon proposed a joint list of Labor and his own list party, Shlomtzion. When Labor rejected Shlomtzion, Sharon tried to form a joint list with the centrist Shinui party, and met denial there as well. After two rejections, Sharon eventually formed a political alliance with Menachem Begin's Likud party. In combination with Begin, the center-right won the Israeli elections of 1977 for the first time ever and Sharon became Minister of Agriculture.
Following the 1977 elections, Shlomtzion formally merged into Likud.
The name of the party comes from a former ruler of Israel, Queen Salome Alexandra of Judea.
