Shiyan is in the north of the Wudang Mountains, and is an important stop for tourists bound there.

Shiyan is one of the most important centres of automobile industry in China. Before 1949 it was a small village, which grew after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Shiyan has been a sister city of Craiova, Romania, since December 1999.
