Shiv Sunder Das pronunciation , born November 5, 1977, is an Indian cricketer. Das was considered the answer to India's long search for a genuine Test opener even at an early age. Das began his Test career well. He did not make big hundreds; but he got plenty of starts and appeared assured and technically sound at the crease, while playing against Zimbabwe, Australia and South Africa. However, he was unable to overcome this tendency of wasting starts, and went through the five Test tour of the West Indies in 2002 without making a single fifty. He was dropped from the Test XI in the subsequent tour of England, and has not played for India since.Wasim Jaffer, Akash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir are all ahead of him in the race to become Virender Sehwag's opening partner. Das represented India in 23 Test matches and scored 1326 runs at an average of 38.91, hitting two centuries - both of them against Zimbabwe, at Nagpur. He was awarded the Man of the series award during India's tour to Zimbabwe in 2001. Das hit 256 in a first class match against Surrey during India's tour to England in 2002. Das captains Orissa in domestic competitions.
