Shite (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shite is an Industrial band with strong Techno roots, first based in Mount Clemens, Michigan, recently in May 2006, the band has been based in Saint Clair Shores, Michigan. In existence since 2001, their music was first distributed in EP form on the Internet. In August 2005 they released their first album Clairvoyance, showcasing the group's Industrial edge. Robert Hodowanez started the band as a solo project, using both EJay samples and his own. After releasing Murder The Monkeys in 2002, Hodowanez sold Shite to Roby Thomas in 2003.

Shite, under the direction of Thomas has seen less stock sampling (there were no EJay samples whatsoever in Clairvoyance) and has turned Shite from a Techno group to something more easily classified as Dark-Industrial with Ambient roots. The band underwent a short name change to Vioxx in 2004, but shortly thereafter returned to their original moniker. In an internet radio interview, Thomas said that the band will continue on with the Industrial sound, and that he plans to also include some doom metal sounds.

Over 95% of Shite's music is Instrumental - one song in Murder The Monkeys and also Bad Things Happen feature a female singer. A computer(or possibly human) voice has been featured in People=Shite, A Time Of Bliss and also Faceless Figure On Static TV.

Since most of Shite's music is free and can be downloaded from MP3 exchange sites, a few stations in Detroit, Michigan use Shite's music as backgrounds for promos. The beginning of Shite's 2002 song simply entitled ? is used on a jazz FM Station in Detroit for station identification (a fading in high-piched sound after a small explosion). Although Shite's music is used for promos, stations are not likely to mention the band name, mainly because of their potentially offensive title.

In February 2006, fans of Shite found a redesigned website announcing a new guitarist Daniel Morton and a vocalist (unnamed at the moment). Furthermore, the website also announced their new project which is said to be floating into more of a doom/stoner metal catergory.

Before Daniel Morton joined the group, Thomas went back to using a few EJay samples along with his Ambient Keyboard playing to create the 59-minute "A Time Of Bliss." This also included a 12-minute solo by Thomas using a keyboard voice (commonly used by Thomas) known as Spacepad. The song at it's last four minutes features a rather obscene prank call when a man calls a payphone and jokes with a number of teenagers about performing homosexual sex and asking a teenager if he had sex with his mother.

[edit] No CDs?

Shite usually releases MP3s but has also produced a CD version of their EPs, of which only 25-50 copies are in circulation. However, Thomas (keyboards, DJ) states that they don't count this as a separate CD release.

[edit] Trademarks

All of Shite's EPs on CD reach the 79-minute marker (minus "Murder The Monkeys", reaching 77).

Hodowanez's (then Shite member) Murder The Monkeys contains, "Panzy" which reached 30 minutes. Thomas, who had been given rights to the band by Hodowanez in 2003, then made "Panzy Two", only two minutes shorter at 28 minutes. Instead of mainly techno music for a straight half-hour like Panzy, Thomas relied on the sounds of nature and dark ambient keyboards for Panzy Two. Near the end of Panzy Two, a short horror story is told about a young girl using magic mushrooms who sees a vision of a demon eating her stomach. Thomas points that influence with Tool's Disgustipated.

[edit] Trivia

Up is mainly a Techno album, but two songs known as "Ghosts" and "Cancer Cell" can be catergorised as doom metal songs.

Clairvoyance's Patrick's Song was recorded (minus the guitars) on July 6, 2005. Thomas put together the song and made it for a friend named Patrick who that day was sentenced to serve an 18-month jail sentence. On that same day, Thomas's best friend died of natural causes. The album Clairvoyance is dedicated to Thomas's dead friend. In the next album, Thomas says there will be a song particularly dedicated to him.
