Shiro Tokisada Amakusa (天草四郎時貞?) is a video game character from SNK Playmore's Samurai Shodown series of fighting games. He is based on the historical figure Amakusa Shiro.
[edit] History
According to his official biography, Amakusa was born in Nagasaki between 1621 and 1623, and died February 28, 1638. He stands 1.81 metres; his weight and blood type are unknown. His weapon is a crystal sphere named "Gadamar." His distinguishing features are his wild red hair and huge multicoloured robe.
Amakusa led a Christian rebellion in the Shimabara region. The Bakufu army crushed his revolt and executed him. He made a deal with the demon Ambrosia, and returned to the mortal world 150 years later, possessing the body of Shinzo Hattori, the son of Hanzo Hattori (Hattori Hanzō). In his attempt to bring Ambrosia to the mortal world with the power of the Palenke Stone, Haohmaru and Nakoruru killed him.
This time, Amakusa was split into two forms: good and evil. The evil, blue-skinned Amakusa resurrected Zankuro Minazuki, but could not control him, so he sealed him in stone. He then kidnapped Kazama Hazuki and used her to maintain his demon castle in Shimabara. The good Amakusa planned to stop his evil counterpart, but Kazuki Kazama killed the evil incarnation, and Mizuki Rashojin sealed him.
When Amakusa freed himself, he fought Mizuki, and saved the souls of Haohmaru, Jubei Yagyu, Kyoshiro Senryo, and Neinhalt Sieger before Mizuki destroyed him.
[edit] Trivia
- Amakusa is loosely based on a character from Makai Tensho, who was in turn based on the historical figure of the same name.
- Amakusa Shiro Tokisada has been voiced by Eiji Yano in many of the games he appeared in.
- Because of his androgynous appearance, Amakusa is often mistaken for a woman (to the point that the Samurai Spirits OVA actually depicts him as a woman), although these assumptions were stronger by the time of the first game.
