The Shire of Yilgarn is a Local Government Area of Western Australia based in the town of Southern Cross (31°13′S 119°19′E; post code: 6426). It covers an area of about 30,720 km² in the Eastern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia about 400km east of the capital, Perth. It has a population of 1,912 (ABS 2001).

The main industries within the shire are mining and farming.

In 1891, the Yilgarn Road Board was gazetted. In 1918, it merged with the Municipality of Southern Cross (gazetted 1892). On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act.[1]
