The Shire of Wagin is a Local Government Area of Western Australia centred on the town of Wagin (33°18′S 117°20′E; post code: 6315; population 1,282 (2001)). It covers an area of about 1,900 km² in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia along the Great Southern Highway about 230km south-east of the capital, Perth. It has a population of 1,725 (ABS 2001).

In 1887, the Arthur Road Board was gazetted, and was renamed to Wagin Road Board in 1905. In July 1906, the council was split in two, with Wagin Municipal Council representing the town, and Wagin Road Board the district. On 15 April 1961, they were reunited under the Wagin Road Board, with a new Town Ward created.

On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act.^[1]

The shire was divided into wards until 1991, but wards were abolished and councillors now sit at large. There are at present 11 councillors.
