The Shire of Brookton is a Local Government Area of Western Australia based in the town of Brookton (32°22′S 117°1′E; post code: 6306). It covers an area of about 1,600 km² in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia generally to the east of Great Southern Highway about 140km south-east of the capital, Perth. It has a population of 965 (ABS 2001). The local economy, worth approximately $25 million per year to the state economy, is based on agriculture - predominantly cereal grains and sheep^[1]

On 10 September 1906, the Brookton Road Board met for the first time after Mr Samuel Williams broke away from the Beverley Road Board. On 1 July 1961, it became the Shire Council following changes to the Local Government Act.^[2]
