Ships can pollute the waterways and oceans in many ways. There are spills from oil tankers, chemical pollution from chemical tankers, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxidegases from exhaust fumes. Discharge of cargo residues from bulk carriers can pollute ports, waterways and oceans. Ships create noise pollution that disturbs natural wildlife, and water from ballast tanks can spread harmful algae and other invasive species.
