From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello there Sheldon, welcome to the 'pedia! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. If you need pointers on how we title pages visit Wikipedia:Naming conventions or how to format them visit our manual of style. If you have any other questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. BTW, was it a bit weird editing your own encyclopedia article? Cheers! --maveric149

No, it wasn't really weird. I've written "author bios" to go on my book jackets. I figure I know a few things about myself that other people wouldn't readily know, and I just did my best to write from a "neutral point of view." (Of course, other people are still free to edit as they see fit.) --Sheldon Rampton 03:27 Jan 9, 2003 (UTC)

I'm delighted with the last changes you made to Richard A. Clarke. It's been a pleasure working with you. Katahon 02:27, 29 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Hello there Sheldon, though I'm not too terribly concerned about the MoveOn.org page, I did notice something in one of your changes that you discussed on the page. MoveOn.org, when it intially started as "Censure and Move On" was intended to be a bipartisan effort; however, as things change with time, so do political views. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that it was indeed bipartisan at one time. However, what was there before was truly not a NPOV.

[edit] Toxic Sludge...

Sheldon - I saw your post to the mailing list and saw that you're the author of 'Toxic Sludge is Good for You'. Last summer, my mom bought that book to consider assigning to her enviromental science class, and I read it in the meantime. I thought it was great, *especially* the chapter on how the book got its name. Thanks for the good reading. →Raul654 04:15, May 4, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Image of you?

Re: Image:Sheldon Rampton.jpg, do you know who took that photography? Could you try to get permission for GFDL use? Or do you have other images of yourself that could fit on the Sheldon Rampton page? David Remahl 19:02, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

The photograph was a publicity photo taken for one of my books. I don't think there's any problem at all with using it. --Sheldon Rampton 06:53, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] "conspiracy"

Just noticed your edit to Banana Republicans; I understand your rationale entirely, but would only like to point out that the website itself [1] refers to it as a "conspiracy". I look forward to reading the book. -- Viajero 23:12, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

While it's true that the word appears on the Banana Republicans website, it appears within quote marks as part of the phrase, "the right-wing conspiracy," which alludes to Hillary Clinton's famous comment about the "vast right-wing conspiracy." The reference on the BR website doesn't make this distinction entirely clear, but the book itself makes a point of clarifying that the Republican political machine is not a conspiracy. FYI, the wording of the text on the BR website was not written by John or me but by one of the publicists for our publisher -- which is not to say that I disown it but merely that the nuances here are slightly different than what I would have written myself. --Sheldon Rampton 06:58, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] MoveOn

I've copied your comment, and my reply, to Talk:MoveOn.org. See you there. Best, Meelar (talk) 12:47, 2004 Jul 23 (UTC)

[edit] Personal attacks on the mailing list

I am sending the following message to multiple users I'd strongly appreciate it if fair-minded users responded to the latest string of baseless personal attacks on the mailing list ([2], [3], [4], [5]). Stan Shebs, Fred Bauder, and RickK started attacking me ferociously since it came up on the mailing list that one of the articles I'd written was featured, Russian constitutional crisis of 1993.

I know that I have made mistakes on Wikipedia; but those mistakes were not motivated by anything other than a passion to make Wikipedia into a serious, professional, quality encyclopedia, not a dumping ground for ungrammatical POV rubbish and fiction. This is making it harder and harder for me to be as efficacious as a user as I want to be. (The distorted impression of my work that these attacks engender are at the root of quite a large number of conflicts on Wikipedia.) That's why I feel that they should finally be thoroughly discredited. 172 06:13, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Stakhanov

Hi, Sheldon! I'm not sure if you're the original author of the Stakhanov article, but I wanted you to check out the changes I've made in it. I added more info. Thanks and take care! KNewman 20:06, Nov 9, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Great work!

Sheldon - Great work on Lee Atwater. When I started it, I felt that it was lacking, but I didn't have anything to pad it out with. Also, I've been meaning to ask you -- I'd like to turn free speech zone into a featured article (I've already gotten permission from someone to use pics from the '04 DNC), and I think it would be a great cooperative project between the Disinfopedia and wikipedia contributors. →Raul654 00:29, Nov 28, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] New wiki?

Hi, Sheldon. I wonder if you might be interested in a possible wiki about journalism. Some ideas are at User:Maurreen/Journalism. Maurreen 08:59, 4 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA; and the-science-is-settled

(William M. Connolley 14:09, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)) Hi Sheldon. You might like to comment at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/William M. Connolley, perhaps. the science is settled has come up :-)

[edit] RfA instructions.

Hi Sheldon. The RfA instructions (at the top of the page), say that we should keep evidence within our own sections of the evidence page, and keep discussion on the talk page. I believe your most recent edit there is misplaced. Cortonin | Talk 05:58, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Evidence, not Talk

You lost track of the page you were on. [6] (SEWilco 16:17, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC))

Hi Sheldon. As I recall, you did a great job fixing up the Sandinista article last year. I don't know how much time for these kinds of things you have at the moment, but do you think you could cast your eye on that article again as well as Daniel Ortega? I get the impression both have been afflicted by pov creep of late. Cheers, Viajero | Talk 16:58, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] User categorization

Greetings, Sheldon Rampton! Please accept this message as an invitation to categorize your user page in the category Category:Wikipedians in Wisconsin and removing your name from the Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Wisconsin page. The page will be removed when all users have been removed. Even if you do not wish to be placed in a category, could you take a moment to remove your name from the Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Wisconsin page? Thanks!!

To add your name to the category, please use the tag to ensure proper sorting.

For more information, please see Wikipedia:User categorisation and Category:Wikipedians by location. -- Roby Wayne Talk • Hist 04:13, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

Hi. I went ahead and add the user categorization to your user page since you were the last active user on Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Wisconsin. Feel free to remove the cat from your user page if you no longer wish to be associated with Wisconsin. Have a great evening!! >: Roby Wayne Talk • Hist • E@ 05:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Magdoff

Sorry to bother. I have posted a Request for Comment for the pages Talk:Harry Magdoff and espionage and Talk:Harry Magdoff. ENdless revert wars and edit conflicts. Input welcome. --Cberlet 22:21, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your portrait copyright.

Hi Sheldon, I was wondering if you could provide a proper copyright tag for your portrait on Sheldon Rampton. Well a more specific tag then just fair use. --Arm 06:39, 4 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WP:AUTO

You're someone who's navigated the hazardous rapids of the Wikipedia autobiography guidelines effortlessly (perhaps with occasional grinding of teeth). I've just revised WP:AUTO per discussion on wikien-l, also adding a section on "If you already have an article about you" — with our increasing popularity, we've got more than a few dismayed article subjects! If you could please look it over and add or subtract whatever you feel relevant, please do so - David Gerard 11:20, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks a lot ..

.. for your endorsement. If I get elected, I hope you and I will have a chance to sit down again, because I'd really like to discuss the issue of PR in Wikipedia, and possible counter-strategies to systematic campaigns, in some greater depth.--Eloquence* 10:14, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
