Sheryl Leach

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sheryl Leach from Dallas, Texas is the creator of the popular children's show Barney & Friends (and the character of Barney himself).

Leach, a former teacher, came up with the idea for the program in 1987 while considering TV shows that she felt would be educational and appeal to her son. Originally, the star was going to be a bear, but since her son liked dinosaurs, the character became a dinosaur (later colored purple and named him Barney). Leach then brought together a team who created a series of home videos, Barney and the Backyard Gang, which also starred actress Sandy Duncan in the first 3 videos. The videos were originally sold directly. Later on in 1991, a employee from Connecticut Public Television (named Larry Rifkin) had rented a Barney video for his daughter. He liked it, so he talked to Sheryl about putting Barney on TV. In October of that year, production started and in April in 1992, it was shown on the Public Broadcasting Service.
