The Sherwood number (Sh) is a dimensionless number used in mass-transfer operation. It represents the ratio of lengthscale to the diffusive boundary layer thickness.

It is defined as follows

Sh = \frac{K_c L}{\mathcal{D}}

It is the mass-transfer equivalent of the Nusselt number where

  • Kc = overall mass transfer coefficient;
  • L = characteristic length;
  • \mathcal{D} = component diffusion coefficient
