[edit] Background

Sherry was born in 1986 to William Birkin and Annette Birkin, scientists developing biological weapons at the Umbrella Corporation's Arklay Laboratory. Due to their busy work schedule, Sherry's parents were not around as she grew up.

In 1995, the Birkins were transferred to a newly-constructed underground laboratory in Raccoon City to work on a new biological weapon called the G-Virus. However, in 1998, William refused to hand the finished virus to Umbrella. Umbrella's Special Forces Unit was sent in to forcefully retrieve the G-Virus. After the struggle, in which Birkin was fatally injured, Birkin however injected himself with the G-Virus and pursued his assailants, eventually killing all but one of them. During this incident, several vials containing the T-Virus broke and the infection was spread over the city by rats soon after.

With Raccoon City infested with zombies, Sherry was told by her mother to seek refuge in the Raccoon Police Department. There, she met with another survivor, Claire Redfield, who was searching for her missing brother. With the precinct itself now infected with mutants and creatures, Sherry sought Claire's protection and the two began to look for a way out of the city.

However, as they made their escape, the two were pursued by one of Umbrella's Tyrants, who was sent to retrieve a hidden G-Virus sample within Sherry's pendant (put there by her mother), as well Sherry's own father, now a monster transformed by the G-Virus. The two eventually found themselves in Umbrella's secret underground lab.

When Claire was separated from Sherry at one point, Claire met with Sherry's mother, Annette. With Sherry in danger, Claire turned to Annette for help. Although Claire eventually saved Sherry, Annette did not survive.

After finding an escape train within the lab, Claire and Sherry managed to leave the lab along with police officer Leon S. Kennedy. However, the three were chased by the mutated Birkin. This caused the train to initiate an anti-biohazard self-destruct mechanism. With Leon and Claire distracting Birkin, Sherry managed to pull the train's emergency brake, allowing them to get far away from the train and leave Birkin to die in the explosion.

After escaping Raccoon City, Leon and Sherry were later picked up by official authorities and Sherry was given in to government custody. She awaits to see Claire again someday, wearing the pink vest she got from her as a reminder.

Wesker and the Organization have been keeping surveillance of Sherry with their spies inside the government in order to find out any secrets she may be hiding.

Sherry appears primarily throughout Claire's scenario as her chief supporting character. During certain portions of Claire's scenarios, the player will take control of Sherry. Sherry is the only character in the game who is unable to use a weapon, due to the fact that she is a child. As a result, she cannot defend herself from enemies, and moves slower than her counterpart characters. However, her small physical profile allows Sherry the ability to move through tight spaces, such as ventilation shafts and barricaded doors, which other characters cannot. Also, due to her size, zombies will be unable to grapple Sherry and must instead use their vomit attack against her, which is relatively weak and easily avoidable. Sherry's voice was provided by actress, Lisa Yamanaka.

Sherry's predicament varies between scenarios. In the Claire A scenario, she is impregnated with a G-embryo by her father, who is himself infected with the G-Virus and has become little more than a rampaging monstrosity, with no trace of his former persona. This event forces Claire to attempt to procure an antidote from Annette so as to prevent the fertilization of the embryo, which would eventually transform Sherry into the most powerful B.O.W. yet encountered, albeit, like her father, at the cost of her humanity. In the subsequent Leon B scenario, Leon carries the unconscious Sherry to their escape route, while Claire prepares the antidote.

In the Claire B scenario, Sherry is not impregnated by Birkin. Instead, she is pursued throughout gameplay by the Tyrant (or "Mr. X") as he attempts to acquire the G-Virus sample hidden within her pendant (the Tyrant does not target Sherry in the Claire A scenario, due to the pendant instead finding its way into Ada's possession). Sherry also bears witness to her mother's death after Annette is struck by fallen debris in the second scenario.

There is a brief reference to Sherry in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis in one of the game's epilogue files, detailing her status following her escape from Raccoon City in Resident Evil 2.

In the documentary "Wesker's Report," Wesker muses that he would never underestimate Birkin, commenting that "...There's something about this little girl..." He mentions that Sherry is safe in "our hands," likely meaning that she has fallen into the care of Wesker's current employer.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Claire A, the Vaccine Synthesis file given to Claire by Annette suggests that the "Devil" vaccine simply inhibits the growth of the G-Virus embryo and does not actually kill it. If Claire A is the canonical scenario for Resident Evil 2, Sherry could be a walking sample of the G-Virus.
