From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shep, short for "shepherd", is a common name for herding dogs. Some well-known examples include:

  • Shep, a famous Blue Peter dog, a border collie, remembered by British TV viewers as inseparable from John Noakes.
  • "Old Shep" as sung by Elvis Presley and many other country performers
  • A supposed ghost dog that habitates the Boulder-Denver turnpike in Colorado. Shep died in 1964, and has been spotted numerous times since then.

Shep is also an abbreviation for Sheppard and similar names. James Sheppard (d. 1970), commonly known as Shep, was lead singer of the Heartbeats and later Shep and the Limelites.
