Shen Woo is a video game character in the King of Fighters series. His first appearance was in KOF 2003.

[edit] History

Little is known about the true origins of the mysterious fighter "Shen Woo", and it may be very possible even he lacks sufficient knowledge about his past himself at all. What is known is that he was raised in the Chinese city of Shanghai and quickly adapted to the style of the hustling city.

He was soon nicknamed Shen Woo, developing his own, devastating street-fighting boxing style best described as "violent". He soon came to be very feared, and grew to like the thrill of the fight, enjoying martial competitions, and even more so fighting himself. Eventually, he came to know the enigmatic fighter known as Ash Crimson, and he entered Shen Woo, himself, and Duo Lon as the "Hero team" into the KOF 2003 tournament. Despite he and Duo Lon having suspicions of Ash's agenda, Shen Woo couldn't care less; he was too eager to find and face stronger opponents.

KOF XI leaves off with Ash getting Iori's powers and abandoning his team mates. It is seemingly revealed that Oswald has been hired by Ash to eliminate Shen for unknown reasons, and he quickly attacks Shen with one of his "card" moves. The ending ensues with Shen angrily returning favor. It is presently unknown what the result of this battle will be.

[edit] Trivia

  • "Shen Woo" is a Chinese title roughly meaning "God of Fighting", a nickname obviously gained from his brutal fighting style and fighting ability. Shen Woo's real name is unknown.
  • Shen Woo is said to be Chinese, although the blonde hair and European features would lead the viewer to believe otherwise.
  • In a game where other characters possess moves including but not limited to: fireballs, phantom kicks, lightning explosions, multi-hit rush combinations, and teleportation... Shen's special techniques don't go much farther than smacking his opponent in the face. Strangely enough, Shen Woo remains one of the higher rated characters of the game despite his lack of any real special moves... the raw power from his normal attacks and his supercancel ability is enough to give him a distinct advantage.
  • In King of Fighters 2003, there was a game bug where Shen's special throw "miss animation" would reflect other character's projectile attacks for some reason if timed correctly. This feature was not apparently planned by any of the game programmers. This "trick" was used so much in competitions by players, that in the follow-up title King of Fighters XI, Shen gained a new move that did exactly that, reflect projectiles, and the "miss animation" for his throw no longer possesses that accidental quality.
  • Shen is unique in possessing a standard move (standing SP) with the desirable quality that its startup animation blocks incoming attacks, including attacks from the air. This gives it a quality much like the Parry dynamic from the Street Fighter series.
  • In KOF '03, Shen's LDM Rage Explosion, whose main purpose is to temporarily increase Shen's power, could connect as an attack if performed close enough, but it did a very miniscule amount of damage. In Shen's return appearance, KOF XI, an opponent tagged by Shen's Rage Explosion suffers a great deal of damage. It is not explained how this move had changed between games, possibly, the programers felt Shen just needed more move options due to his relatively small command list in comparison to the rest of the cast.
  • Certain gamers consider Shen to be a rip-off of Steve Fox from the Tekken series. Both are blonde and use boxing moves as their arsenal (Steve also wore a similar outfit to Shen in Tekken 4).
  • It can also be assumed that Shen is a take on Bunshichi Tawara from the Tenjho Tenge Series. Both of their fightings styles are their own personal styles of fighting, both are famous for their powerful punches, both fight others with supernatural powers, and they both have light colored hair, despite their supposed ethnic origins
  • Shen makes an appearance in the Dragon's Lair stage in KOF: Maximum Impact 2, sitting on the railing of the upper level.
