Shemozzle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shemozzle can refer to the following meanings:
- Shemozzle (also known as Schmozzle) is an Australian slang word with Yiddish and Hebrew origins. It means chaos or confusion, and is likely to have originated from the word Schlemazel, or a person prone to bad luck.
- According to the book Australian Genesis: Jewish Convicts & Settlers 1788 - 1860, by John S. Levi and G.F.J. Bergman, the word entered Australian slang in the 19th century as the small local Jewish population grew in visibility. Other Australian slang words originating from the same source are cobber (friend) and shikkered (drunk).
- Shemozzle and Schmozzle are both also names of unrelated Australian music groups.
- Shemozzle is the name of an independent Hobart-based band. Their website [1] describes their music thus:
"... eclectic, theatrical, darkly comic and mischievous [..] combining their original material with Gypsy, Klezmer and Tango sounds, Shemozzle transport their audiences beyond the everyday to a land where feet just won't keep still!"
- Schmozzle is the name of a Melbourne-based independent rock group whose website [2] describes them as following:
- "Schmozzle is a Melbourne musician who used to be the singer/songwriter/guitar player in 1990s indie rock trio Peachfuzz. Schmozzle’s nerve centre is a Mac running ProTools in a converted garden shed somewhere in the northern suburb of Coburg, near the halal bakeries and Greek cake shops. Schmozzle likes DIY musicians who make sweet sounds with frayed edges, and those who extract new brews from old bones. Plus bands that can rock and sway in the same breath."
