Shelbyville is a city in Shelby County, Missouri, United States. The population was 682 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Shelby CountyGR6.

Shelbyville is located at 39°48′26″N, 92°2′28″W (39.807187, -92.041154)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²). 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it (4.88%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 682 people, 262 households, and 164 families residing in the city. The population density was 342.0/km² (881.2/mi²). There were 291 housing units at an average density of 145.9/km² (376.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.21% White, 0.44% African American, 0.73% Asian, 0.29% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.47% of the population.

There were 262 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.4% were non-families. 35.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,542, and the median income for a family was $36,944. Males had a median income of $24,844 versus $20,288 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,759. About 8.1% of families and 16.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.0% of those under age 18 and 35.7% of those age 65 or over.
