Shek Kip Mei Estate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shek Kip Mei Estate (Chinese: 石硤尾邨) is the first public housing estate in Hong Kong. It is located in Shek Kip Mei, New Kowloon. The construction was the results of a 1953 fire in Shek Kip Mei. The majority of inhabitants in the squatters over the hill lost their homes in one night. The estate was built to settle their families.
All remaining 1950's blocks were closed on 16 October 2006, and are scheduled to be demolished by the end of the year. One of the blocks, Mei Ho House (zh:美荷樓, Block 41), will however be preserved, tentatively as a museum of Hong Kong's public housing development.
