The Sheffield Sabres are a member of the British Collegiate American Football League (BCAFL)'s Northern Conference-Western Division. The Sabres have fielded competitive squads throughout their history, though the team is yet to win its first playoff game or division championship.

In the 1989-90 season the team was known as the Sheffield Pirates. From 1990-1997 the team was known as the Sheffield Zulus. The team did not compete for three seasons in the BCAFL, from 1997-2000.

The Team was reformed in 1999 by Damian Marshall as the Sheffield Sabres and returned to competitive football in 2000.

In the 2006-2007 season, the Sabres will be coached by Jake Treen (Head Coach and Defensive Co-ordinator), Bob Wilson (Offensive Co-ordinator) and Simon Dwyer (Line Coach).

For this new season the club's traditional Navy and Gold colours have been replaced with Black and Gold, in line with those of other University sports teams. Another major change for this year is the Sabres' relocation away from their spiritual home 'Sabre Field' located at Norton Playing Fields. 'Old Slopey' as the pitch became known, as loved by Sabres as it is maligned by their opponents, is sure to retain its place in Sabres folklore as the team now look to pastures new.
