[edit] Spam

Please stop adding links to your company. It really is not appreciated, it's considered spamming and can get you blocked from editing. Just zis Guy you know? 14:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Dear Shan mcarthur@spamcop.net,

Welcome to Wikipedia!

Unfortunately, using your e-mail address as your username is not a good idea. Wikipedia content is extensively copied and the site itself is one of the most visited sites in the world. Any edit you make on Wikipedia will have your username attached to it, and using your email address will make you a tempting target for spammers. We recommend that you change your username at Wikipedia:Changing username in order to prevent abuse.

If you need any help, simply contact me on my talk page, or go to Wikipedia:Help desk. Another option is to place {{helpme}} on your own talk page, and someone will come shortly to help. Remember to sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). Again, welcome!

Please stop. If you continue to use Wikipedia for advertising, as you did in Comparison of content management systems, you will be blocked from editing. —xyzzyn 02:49, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

This is a final warning. The next time you add advertising for your product, the matter will be handed over to the administrators for a possible block. —xyzzyn 03:10, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Please refrain from undoing other people's edits repeatedly. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing Wikipedia under the three-revert rule, which states that nobody may revert a single page more than three times in 24 hours. (Note: this also means editing the page to reinsert an old edit. If the effect of your actions is to revert back, it qualifies as a revert.) Thank you. —xyzzyn 03:19, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Blocked

I have blocked this account because it includes an email address. If you want to create a new account that does not include an email address, please go ahead and do so. User:Zoe|(talk) 03:13, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

This blocked user (block log | autoblocks | unblock | contribs) asked to be unblocked, but one or more administrators has reviewed and declined this request. Other administrators can also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy). This unblock request continues to be visible. Do not replace this message with another unblock request.

Request reason: "I cannot change my username because Zoe blocked me. The block was within a week and a half after the first suggestion that I should change my username. I created my username BEFORE a policy on Wikipedia was set that doesn't allow it. I would like to be unblockes so that I can change my username. I attempted to contact Zoe by email and got no response. FYI - even to date, I cannot find any reference to blocking an account for the reason that it includes an email address. I would appreciate a reference, but I will be changing it anyways. I just need my account temporarily unblocked so that I can rename it to ShanM. If you want, you can change it at the same time."

Decline reason: "

Your username has been blocked indefinitely because it may be rude or inflammatory, unnecessarily long/confusing, too similar to an existing user, contains the name of an organization or website, uses non-Latin characters, or is otherwise inappropriate (see our blocking and username policies for more information). You are encouraged to create a new account and contribute to Wikipedia under a more appropriate username. Wikipedia:Username provides guidance on selecting an appropriate username. You may also edit Wikipedia without creating an account.

You are not allowed to edit Wikipedia under an inappropriate username. If you would like to discuss the block, you may appeal on your talk page or email the administrator who blocked you. Due to Wikipedia's mechanism for enforcing name changes, your IP address may be temporarily blocked. Unless you have also been engaging in vandalism or impersonation of another user, we will remove that block as soon as possible.

If you want to keep the contributions from your old account for your new username, please follow these directions: (1) Add {{unblock-un|new username}} to your user talk page. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page. (2) Soon, an admin may come to unblock you. (3) You will have 24 hours after the unblock to file a request on Wikipedia:Changing username before you may be re-blocked. Note that this can only be done before you create the new one. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username. In many cases (especially if your account has few or no edits), it is a lot easier to create a new account.

Thanks for the instructions on how to rename the user account. Instructions for this should be posted on the blocking page and the account renaming page. Once I get this account back in good order, I will see what I can do to improve the experience for others.

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

Allowing username change to ShanM (talk contribs). Please put this request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking.

First of all, it's all and well to complain, and also to express your thoughts; I don't mind it at all, it's a free country. However, the way you went about it was highly outrageous and innapropriate. My assumption is that you complained to Mr. Wales about this. Why did you not discuss this with your blocking administrator and me first? I invite you to look up and read a couple of sections above yours, there is a rationale there as to why E-mail addresses are blocked. I am very uncomfortable with the way this was handled, and I am going to ask you to please keep all block discussions between you and the blocking administrator. Involve other parties, especially Mr. Wales, as a last resort. —Pilotguy (push to talk) 23:02, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

I am sorry you were offended - it was not my intention to offend anyone. I did try to work with the administrator that blocked my account in the first place, but that administrator was non-responsive. If you look at his talk page there are other users in the same situation as me. I sent the email to Mr. Wales before you posted the solution of the temporary unblock. I did this by following the link on my user page that had his name front and center in the block notice. I then received your suggestion above, followed it, was eventually approved, and successfully changed my username. It would have been much easier for me if you had just approved it instead of denying it, but the end result is that it is all fixed up, so there are no hard feelings. I am just a new wikipedia user and was just following the links that were on my page. My appologies if you were offended. I did place a comment on your talk page regarding this issue, but I sent the email to Mr. Wales previously to either of us interacting. I don't understand how my actions were inappropriate or outrageous. Please keep in mind that my account was blocked for having an email address PRIOR to there being a policy on Wikipedia, and with less than a week notice from the administrator that did the blocking. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by ShanM (talkcontribs) 23:29, 6 December 2006 (UTC).
ROFL! Nice one Shan. Don't mind Pilotguy, he's clearly a moron! You did the right thing, bypass the middleman and go straight to the top :p
