Shax (board game)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shax (known as Jar or Mororova in some areas) is a board game played in Africa, and particularly Somalia, from ancient times and still popular today.

Shax has a large influence on Somali literature, with stratagies and methods often mentioned. In the historical nomadic lifestyle of the Somali people, Shax was a method of communication between different tribes.

Shax is only played by men. Usually it is played on boards marked by holes in the ground, using stones, shells or other handy items to represent pieces.

The board layout is similar to the one used by Nine Men's Morris.
