Shaun Morgan Welgemoed (Born December 21, 1978) is a South African musician of Dutch ancestry, best known as the lead singer of the alternative rock band Seether. Critics frequently accuse Morgan of intentionally trying to sound much like Kurt Cobain[citation needed], the lead singer of the popular 1990s grunge group, Nirvana. However, Welgemoed's voice is merely similar in range to that of his former idol and other famed musicians. Seether covers of Nirvana tracks including "Something in the Way" and "You Know You're Right" are nearly indistinguishable in pieces from their original counterparts. Likewise, some audiences compare Morgan's voice to that of the late Jim Morrison of the 60s rock group The Doors[citation needed]. This is seen nowhere more remarkably than in the bonus track, spoken in his native tongue (Afrikaans), on Karma and Effect, the band's third album under their current name. Formerly, the band was known as Saron Gas, under which a first album, Fragile, was recorded and released in 2000 in South Africa.
