Sharpstown Center

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sharpstown Center, or Sharpstown Mall, is the world's first air conditioned mall located in southwest Houston, Texas within the Sharpstown development—the city's first master-planned community. The mall consists of the mall building itself and the high-rise Jewerly Exchange Center.

[edit] History

Sharpstown Mall consisted of many stores and the Sharpstown National Bank—now the Jewerly Exchange Center. Because it was the world's first air conditioneed mall, many Houston residents residing in the central part of the city wanted to experience the "mall of the future."

This was a major problem because it took Houstonians hours to get to the mall. Frank Sharp decided to donate a strip of land which was the future home of the Southwest Freeway.
