Shark Trust
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shark Trust is a charitable organization founded in the UK in 1997[1] that encourages the conservation of sharks, and promotes the "international study, management and conservation of sharks, skates and rays".
The trust believes that many shark species have been put at risk by humans (it is estimated that 100 million sharks are killed every year by humans). The Shark Trust also makes an effort to prevent shark finning.
To raise funds events are held throughout the year including eggcase hunts, at which participants search the coastline for shark eggcases.
The trust allows members to adopt a shark, with the money raised donated to conservation and scientific research.
Projects of the trust include The Whale Shark Project [2] focusing solely on whale sharks as well as a project devoted to the reduction in shark finning [3].
Recent increase in public awareness of sharks has led to a greater influx of members.
