Shark Cafe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Shark Café is a mid-Pacific Ocean area located about halfway between Baja California and Hawai'i. The area received its unofficial name from researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute who were studying the great white shark species using satellite tracking tags.
Through analysis of the satellite tracking data, researchers discovered the species congregates in the area. The reasons for this behavior have not yet been identified. Surveillance of the satellite-tagged fish revealed they go to a location mid-ocean where they loiter. The area has very little food for the animals; researchers describe it as the shark equivalent of a desert. Early theories were that mating occurred there. Continued studies have revealed that juvenile sharks also travel to the area, suggesting the trip serves some other purpose. Both male and female great white sharks travel to this isolated ocean locale.
