Sharaba

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Hindu belief, Lord Shiva took the form of a Sharaba, which is part-lion, part-human and part-bird. In this fierce form, Lord Shiva is known as Lord Sarabheswara.

Lord Sarabheswara engaged Lord Narasimha, an Avatar of Lord Vishnu in combat, in order to quell Lord Narasimha's terrifying rage, which had not dissipated even after He (Lord Narasimha) had slain the wicked Rakshasa king Hiranyakashipu.

Very soon Lord Narasimha realised that the Sharaba was none other than Lord Shiva. He saluted the Shrabha, shed His wrath and became pleasant to be worshipped by Prahlada and other devotees.
