Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy, SASTRA, is a university located in the city of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India. SASTRA offers various undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Sciences, Management and Arts besides various Doctoral programs and has state-of-the-art laboratories in many departments, an excellent library and very good infrastructure. With an acceptable teacher-taught ratio, the institute strives for academic excellence. Now the deemed university is on a process of getting converted into an Affiliating type of university. Around 45 colleges are purported to be getting affiliated to SASTRA.

SASTRA is among the top 50 engineering institutes in India. SASTRA has an excellent infrastructure with state-of-the art facilities in various departments for teaching, training, research and consultancy. SASTRA has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade equivalent to FIVE STAR. The infrastructure facilities have won the appreciation of many visitors including the Chairman of the visiting Washington Accord Team, who recorded thus “I was deeply impressed with your achievements over the last 20 years. You have truly developed a better than world-class undergraduate engineering facility. You have helped me form a very positive impression of education in India . For that I thank you”.With an impressive placement record the institute is now a well known and respected name among the students and companies.
Since its inception SASTRA has achieved national standing in terms of academic performance, co-curricular and extra curricular activities and also in its growth and commitment to social service. The standard of excellence of our courses is reflected in the grades awarded to us by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and in the success of our students in both industry and academia, in India & abroad.

The dreams of the founding fathers of SASTRA took shape in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering which is now renamed, SHANMUGHA ARTS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & RESEARCH ACADEMY [SASTRA]. It has carved a niche for itself as a Centre for fostering and developing the body, mind and sprit of its students. SASTRA is totally committed to this three-fold flowering of the students entrusted to its care. Our blend of academic excellence and real world experience with moral values has earned SASTRA, national recognition.
The institution was started as Shanmugha Polytechnic in 1984 by Balmurga Educational Trust. Later, engineering courses were introduced and it was raised in status as Shanmugha College of Engineering (SCE) affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India. In 2001, the institution got the Deemed University status from the Indian university controlling body, UGC - University Grants Commission (India). The university was founded by a former bank clerk Mr.R. Sethuraman, who later became the vice chancellor of this university. The Government of India has established a Centre of Relevance and Excellence in Advanced Computing and Information Processing (TIFAC CORE at SASTRA). This centre has equipped with state-of-the art infrastructure facilitating high end research and specialized teaching at SASTRA. SASTRA houses a HP RP8400 super computer for advanced computing facilities. Also,the university has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.

A sprawling campus housing a built up area of over 1 million square feet and a vibrant population of over 5,000 students have made SASTRA a landmark in the educational map of India. Building professional contacts on a personal level, students are well supported by the Department of Training and Placement, which offers them a continuous and progressive training that hones their personal, social, inter-personal and professional skills right from their first year. Professional and specialized training is imparted through group discussions, interviews and competitive examinations. Campus interviews are conducted and students are guided to plan their career. Counseling is provided to students to face interviews and to make informed choices, both academic and professional, from among the various options available to them.

Encouragement is given to students in various co-curricular, extra curricular and sports activities. SASTRA has various clubs like Auto Club, Literary Club, Oratory and Debating Club, Fine Arts Club, etc. to promote the latent talents of students. An Indoor Stadium & Gymnasium established with 5 billiard tables, 4 badminton courts, a basketball court, table tennis and various outdoor sports provide the students an opportunity to excel in sporting activities. CARPE-DIEM is SASTRA’s popular annual cultural festival.Jayaganapathy Temple situated in the campus has been the source of spiritual atmosphere in the campus. College strictly follows the dress code. and all students wears formal dress during the working hours of college.
The institute has five boys' hostel and one girls' hostels providing accommodation to over 2500 boys and 1000 girls. The hostels provide a salubrious ambience and a feel-good climate and are equipped with all amenities for living, dining and recreation that makes each inmate feel at home. They provide a right atmosphere for intellectual stimulation and balanced growth.
Saraswathi Sadan, the aptly named library of the university is an architectural elegance over an area of about 47,000 sq ft with modern study area, audio visual room, internet and reprographic facilities.Saraswathi Sadan is the nerve center of the entire campus catering to the needs of the staff in full measure. Saraswathi Sadan contains over 75,400 books valued at Rs 3 crores, the library subscribes to 286 journals and periodicals; including IEEE publications.
The university also has a Training and Placement department.Recognizing the complexity of the career planning process and the myriad of options available to graduates, the Department of Training and Placement conducts programmes that offer various services to meet the professional development needs of students. The department partners with students in the process of career management. This starts with self assessment and leads to identifying a career that meets individual goals.This has been greatly appreciated by a lot of educationalists.
Within the University campus are located the Indian Overseas Bank with ATM facility, STD / ISD pay phone, photo copying centre, canteen, parking lot, stand-by power generators, a separate telephone exchange, television facilities in the hostel, water treatment plant, etc. for the comfort of students and staff.
In February-March 2007, the college will host the first editions of its inter-college national-level Technical Festival Daksh and also the inter-college culturals Kuruksastra.
